Coimbatore : "Instead of fighting in Facebook on preserving our Tamil Culture, it's important to fight in real life", say two youngsters from Coimbatore who were busy collecting palm seeds from the outskirts of the city.
While many of us take an extended nap on a Sunday, Prabhakaran (28) from Bodipalayam and Karthikeyan (28) of Seerapalayam set out on their motorcycles as early as 5 am in the morning on every Sundays to collect fallen palm fruits and extract seeds from them. The duo begin their hunt by morning and collect upto 500 palm seeds from the fallen fruits by mid-day.
"The collected seeds are well-preserved. With the onset of rains, we plan to plant them across the city and suburbs at all suitable places. Mainly, we focus on the bunds of water bodies, as Palm trees will help control soil erosion and aid in strengthening the bund", noted the youngsters.
Both, Prabhakaran and Karthikeyan opine that "By just repeatedly posting in one's Facebook wall on preserving our culture will take us nowhere. It is reel. The real change can be realised only when youngsters work towards the cause on field. Well, there is much awareness among people on the need and benefit of planting native tree saplings through social media. But how are we going to realise our quest? It can be accomplished only by working towards the goal. And, that's what drove us this far."
They duo appealed to the youngsters to join hands and do their part to bring back the lost greenery. They also pointed that planting more palm trees can yield more employment opportunities, over a period.
